Adelaide PhD Summer Institute in International Trade

The Institute for International Trade invites PhD students in the field of international trade (JEL-Classification F0 to F2) to present their work at the 3rd Adelaide PhD Summer Institute.

Local organizers are Benedikt Heid, Laura Marquez-Ramos and Frank Stähler. The first two summer institutes took place in February 2017 and February 2018, and its objective is to provide PhD students in this field with a platform for discussing their ideas with both fellow PhD students and senior scholars. Each student will be given at least 45 minutes of presentation and discussion time. Students are not required to present an already completed paper or paper draft, but may also report on the progress of their research strategies. As it is also an objective of the PhD Summer Institute that students receive feedback at an early stage of their PhD project, PhD students of all years are strongly encouraged to participate. Both theoretical and empirical research in international trade is welcome.

The PhD Summer Institute will be hosted by the Institute for International Trade of the University of Adelaide. Participating senior researchers will include:

  • Dr Benedikt Heid, University of Adelaide
  • Dr Laura Marquez-Ramos, University of Adelaide
  • Professor Richard Pomfret, University of Adelaide
  • Professor Frank Stähler, University of Adelaide and University of Tübingen
  • Associate Professor Shandre Thangavelu, University of Adelaide

We would like to advise that the PhD Summer Institute will be succeeded by the Australasian Trade Workshop that will be hosted by the RMIT University in Melbourne on March 23 and 24 (ATW14, see https://www.rse.anu.edu.au/seminars-events/conferences/australasian-trade-workshop/). PhD students accepted for presentation at the PhD Summer Institute are also accepted to attend ATW14.

There is no registration fee, and the Institute for International Trade offers a limited number of travel scholarships of AUD 500 per student to attend the PhD Summer Institute. Please indicate in your application whether you wish to be considered for a travel scholarship. We will provide recommendations for accommodation, but participants will be required to book all travel and accommodation independently.

Please submit your application for presentation before January 15, 2019 in pdf format to frank.staehler@adelaide.edu.au. Your application should include the title of your presentation, an outline of your research ideas and/or a paper draft. You may also attach a letter of support from your PhD supervisor. If you have any further questions, please e-mail Frank Stähler at frank.staehler@adelaide.edu.au.
